Explain different ways to evaluate the performance of the ML model.

09-May-2024Evaluating the performance of a machine learning (ML) model is crucial to understand how well it generalizes future predictions and to identify any weaknesses. Here are some common techniques and metrics for evaluating ML model performance:
Accuracy: This metric measures the proportion of correctly predicted instances out of the total instances. It’s suitable for balanced datasets but can be misleading when dealing with imbalanced classes.
Precision: Precision represents the ratio of true positive predictions to the total positive predictions. It’s useful when minimizing false positives is critical (e.g., in medical diagnoses).
Recall (Sensitivity): Recall calculates the ratio of true positive predictions to the total actual positive instances. It’s essential when minimizing false negatives is crucial (e.g., identifying fraudulent transactions).
F1 Score: The F1 score combines precision and recall into a single metric. It balances both false positives and false negatives. It’s especially useful when class distribution is imbalanced.
Confusion Matrix: A confusion matrix provides a detailed breakdown of true positives, true negatives, false positives, and false negatives. It’s useful for understanding the model’s performance at different thresholds.
Mean Square Error (MSE): MSE is commonly used for regression tasks. It calculates the average squared difference between predicted and actual values. Lower MSE indicates better performance.
