Can You Start a Tech Business without a Technical Education?

Technology is one of the most lucrative sectors to start a business in right now, but it’s true that tech entrepreneurs usually have a solid technological education. So, is it really feasible to consider launching a tech business if you don’t have a master’s degree in software or hardware engineering? The answer is subjective and dependent on a number of factors, but it is certainly not impossible either.

Business Experience is Extremely Important

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a company that sells fruit or smartphones – as long as the object is to sell, business experience is invaluable. Sure, someone with both the technological prowess and the business knowledge would be better equipped to start a business in technology, but being interested in a particular field means that you probably already have an idea in your head.

Even without formal technical knowledge, it is possible to give shape to your ideas with just a basic understanding of the core sector and an excellent grip over the business aspect.

You Can Learn the Basics Online

In order to explore the tech business, you will need at least a basic understanding of the products and how they work, which is actually not all that hard, since there are so many online diploma programs and specialized designing tools out there that make it easy for almost anyone to get started.

A perfect example would be Upverter.com, which is a great place for beginners and advanced pros alike, as long as the product idea concerns electronic design or PCB design. Upverter.com has tools that have been created with the specific purpose of being useful for anyone, whether they have an advanced electronic engineering degree or not.

The bottom line is that, if you are going to launch a tech startup, you can learn the basics of that specific field with a short program, and familiarize yourself with the applications you will need. Thanks to online education and the easy availability of software resources, that shouldn’t be too hard to do either!

Become an Investor Instead

It is a well-known fact that Warren Buffet does not prefer using advanced technology, but what most people do not realize is that his company Berkshire now essentially owns Amazon and about 5% of Apple!

Although the CEO of Berkshire is neither interested in technology nor has the knowledge to start a tech company all on his own, Warren Buffet is the world’s greatest investors and has stakes in multiple of the world’s largest tech companies. There is no better example than him to enunciate how one can come to own a tech company without even being particularly interested in or knowledgeable about technology!

So, does this mean you can explore the tech industry without a college degree in the specific field? Absolutely! Of course, it would likely be helpful to you if you have the background, but even if you don’t, there’s no reason why you can’t start to learn the basics now.
