Engineering graduates may be in for "bad news" from Infosys.
Infosys, a prominent Indian IT giant, has delivered disheartening news for graduating engineers this year. In a recent earnings call during the second quarter, the company's Chief Financial Officer, Nilanjan Roy, announced a change in their recruitment strategy. Despite hiring over 50,000 fresh graduates in the previous year, Infosys currently has no plans to conduct campus recruitments. Roy explained that the company possesses a substantial pool of fresh talent and room for enhancing their utilization, making it unnecessary to visit college campuses at this time. He clarified that the company hired aggressively ahead of demand last year and is currently focused on training their recruits in Gen AI. However, Infosys still needs time to optimize the use of its resources, and consequently, they have deferred campus recruitment. Roy mentioned that they would continually evaluate this decision on a quarterly basis in alignment with their future projections. In response to a specific query about campus recruitment for the current year, Roy stated, "As we see it, I don't think it is likely that this year, we are going to be going...but we will watch it every quarter."
Return to office
Infosys CEO Salil Parekh has provided insights into the company's approach to the return-to-office strategy. He mentioned that the number of employees returning to the physical workspace is steadily increasing. However, he also emphasized that Infosys is committed to maintaining flexibility in its approach to work arrangements.
This stance from Infosys differs from that of its larger competitor, TCS, which has instructed its extensive workforce of over 614,000 employees to resume working from offices, discontinuing the remote work practices that were necessitated by the pandemic.
Parekh stated, "Having said that every quarter, every week, we are seeing more and more employees back on the campus. And we believe this will continue." As of September 30, 2023, the company's headcount was at 3.28 lakh (328,000).
In certain cases involving specific client projects or particular types of work engagements, Infosys is more inclined to have all employees working together in the office. In such instances, employees are already returning to the office. However, as a general principle, Infosys is committed to supporting a flexible approach to work. This approach is considered appropriate due to the infrastructure established for remote work. Consequently, Infosys intends to continue with this flexible approach, but there will still be specific situations, such as projects or client-specific work, where employees will be required to work from the company's physical campuses.
