10 Rules of Web Design

Simple is beautiful.

Cramming too much into each page creates confusion. Visitors become frustrated when they have to scan through rows of links and images to find what they are looking for. Keeping your pages simple makes your site easier to use.

Design is paramount.

If you're meeting people for the first time, you want to create a good impression. The same should be true for your website. The general appearance of your site is the first thing your visitors will notice.

Navigation should be intuitive.

There are few things more frustrating than not being able to find what you are looking for on a website. The pages should be well organized with a top-down design so that visitors can easily navigate through the different sections of your site.

Consistency is the key.

Visitors should not feel that they are visiting a new website each time they open a new page on their site. The consistent design on the pages of your site makes navigation a much easier task.

 The colors are crucial.

The selection of colors can make or break a website. Most of us have visited websites that are simply painful to see. When choosing colors, use a consistent color palette that does not collide and make sure there is a strong contrast between the text and the background.

Make your website responsive.

People will access your website using a wide variety of devices, from smartphones to desktops. Therefore, it is important that your website is displayed correctly on different screen sizes. CSS media queries are an excellent way to implement a responsive web design.

Develop for multiple browsers.

Browsers are supposed to represent web pages in the same way, but they don't. Therefore, be sure to check your website in several browsers to make sure everything appears correctly. It is better to detect problems in advance rather than relying on complaints from visitors.

Check your website for errors.

As any experienced editor will tell you, a great piece of work can be marred by a small mistake. If you are a webmaster, check your websites regularly to see if there are typos, broken links, and images that are not loading correctly.

Write your own code.

Whether HTML or PHP, nothing better than writing your code from scratch. If you build your site from pre-written templates and scripts, you will have no idea when something goes wrong. When you code your own pages, you have full control over how they look and act.

Do not forget the content.

Even if your site is beautifully designed, it's just an empty shell with no content. A good website has great design and great content. Therefore, make sure that your pages have unique and original content that makes it worth visiting.
