Implementing CRUD Operations in .NET Core Using LINQ and Stored Procedures.

Introduction

In the world of software development, CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations are fundamental when working with databases. .NET Core, a cross-platform framework developed by Microsoft, provides a powerful combination of LINQ (Language-Integrated Query) and stored procedures for efficient data manipulation. In this article, we will learn how to implement CRUD operations in .NET Core using LINQ and stored procedures and provide comprehensive guidance on how to deal with data retention in your applications.

Understanding CRUD Operations

Before diving into the implementation details, let's briefly review what CRUD operations entail:

  1. Create: This operation involves creating new records or entities in the database.
  2. Read: The Read operation focuses on retrieving data like specific records or entire datasets from the database.
  3. Update: Updating is necessary when you need to modify existing data in the database.
  4. Delete: The Delete operation is used to remove records or entities from the database.

Now that we've clarified the basics let's proceed with the implementation.

Setting Up Your .NET Core Project

In order to implement CRUD operations, first, we need to set up a database-based.NET Core project. Entity Framework Core can be used to create your.NET Core database schema and database model. Once the.NET Core project is established, implementation can begin.

1. Create Operation (Insert Data)

To perform the Create operation using LINQ, you can use the following steps:

  • Define a model representing your data.
  • Create a new instance of your model.
  • Add it to your DbContext and call `SaveChanges` to commit the changes to the database.

Here's an example:

using (var context = new YourDbContext())
{
    var newEntity = new YourEntity { /* Populate properties */ };
    context.YourEntities.Add(newEntity);
    context.SaveChanges();
}

2. Read Operation (Retrieve Data)

For the Read operation, you can use LINQ queries to filter, sort, and retrieve data from the database. For instance, to retrieve all records:

using (var context = new YourDbContext())
{
    var allEntities = context.YourEntities.ToList();
    // Use all entities as needed.
}

3. Update Operation (Modify Data)

To update existing data, retrieve the entity you want to modify, change its properties, and save the changes:

using (var context = new YourDbContext())
{
    var entityToUpdate = context.YourEntities.FirstOrDefault(e => e.Id == entityId);
    if (entityToUpdate != null)
    {
        // Update entity properties.
        context.SaveChanges();
    }
}

4. Delete Operation (Remove Data)

Deleting data is straightforward using LINQ. Find the entity to delete, remove it from the context, and save changes:

using (var context = new YourDbContext())
{
    var entityToDelete = context.YourEntities.FirstOrDefault(e => e.Id == entityId);
    if (entityToDelete != null)
    {
        context.YourEntities.Remove(entityToDelete);
        context.SaveChanges();
    }
}

Using Stored Procedures

LinQ is capable of performing database operations, however, there are instances in which the utilization of stored procedures is advantageous, particularly when dealing with intricate operations or legacy databases. For.NET Core applications, the following steps can be followed to utilize stored procedures:

  1. Create your stored procedure in the database.
  2. Create a function in your DbContext to call the stored procedure.
  3. Call the function from your code to execute the stored procedure.
public void ExecuteStoredProcedure(parameters)
{
    context.Database.ExecuteSqlRaw("EXEC YourStoredProcedure @param1, @param2, ...", parameters);
}

Conclusion

This article provided an overview of the CRUD operations that can be implemented within .NET Core with the help of LINQ and the use of stored procedures. It is essential for any developer who works with databases in a.NET Core application to have a basic understanding of these operations. .NET Core offers the flexibility to meet the data manipulation requirements of any developer, regardless of whether they prefer to use LINQ or need to use stored procedures. As the user progresses in their work with databases within a.NET Core project, they will acquire valuable experience in the management of data and the optimization of database interactions.
