Pregnancy is meant to be the time of hope and excitement. Who won’t be happy to hear the happy news while expecting a new member in the family? Always the good news disclaimers are the heroes! Pregnancy tests are most reliable from the first day of a missed period. Starting from the ancient Egyptian history where the written records of urine-based pregnancy test were found, it has evolved through many stages.

In the early twentieth century, research on human reproduction intensified. The progesterone and estrogen were isolated. Scientists found the presence of a specific hormone- human chronic gonadotropin (hCG) which is only found in a pregnant woman. The first pregnancy kit on the market was available in the United States in the mid-1970s.

Understanding pregnancy tests
There are mainly two types of pregnancy tests; one using a urine sample and the other using a blood sample. The two tests the presence of hCG is detected which are produced by the placenta shortly after the embryo attaches to the uterine walls. The level of hCG builds up rapidly in the body during the first few days of pregnancy. Most of the pregnancy symptoms are triggered by the rapid shift in hormones. Different types of pregnancy tests are available today so that one can easily confirm even from home.

It can be performed in two different ways in a clinic or at home. This method involves collecting the urine in a cup and dipping a particular strip into that urine. Change in color, a line or a symbol (like plus, minus) on the strip will be visible after a while. The modern digital kits will show the results in print like “pregnant” or “not pregnant”. Doctors mostly suggest the pregnancy test on the first day of the missed period which will be normally two weeks after conception. Some tests can be taken earlier which are more sensitive than the others. Home pregnancy tests are almost 97 % accurate and it gives the benefits of speed, privacy, easiness.

• Blood tests

But if a false negative first response on a pregnancy test is obtained, that may be due to the following reasons. The test is taken too early or one may not have enough hCG in their system.
