Impact of technology on environment

HARIDHA P623 19-Dec-2022

From a three-year-old infant to an eighty-year-old man, technology has largely disappeared from everyone's life. In our modern world, technology is present at all times and in all places. They have suffered significantly as a result of the sedentary lifestyle that the majority of people in the globe now practise, as well as serious environmental damage. Many academics and environmentalists have come to the conclusion that people's improper use of technology has resulted in irreversible harm to the environment as a result of the current state of the world around us.

It is undeniable that technology has been used as a tool for environmental harm caused by human activity, yet not all environmentalists agree on whether technology should be banned altogether.

Even though many people believe that technology is more of a curse than a blessing, if looked at from a deeper perspective, it is asserted and thought that technology itself is not bad; rather, what makes it detrimental is how humans misuse it. It is proposed that using technology properly could help conserve the environment since, when done appropriately, its advantages can outweigh its drawbacks.

Environment-damaging technology

Environmental contamination is caused by the misuse of technology and its improper application. As a result of greater demand, which encourages higher consumption and consequently leads to higher supply of the goods that play a vital role in industrialization with regard to better technology, there has been a noticeable increase in the manufacture of machines and automobiles. Continuous technical advancements generated the Industrial Revolution, which improved quality of life.

As a result, industrialization and technological development to satisfy human needs have had a negative impact on the environment since they have increased pollution to an appalling degree due to people's increased need for technology. The environment has been left to bear the brunt of technology's impact despite the fact that it has revolutionised every area of a human's life. It is essential to do in-depth research on the harmful effects of technology and the factors that have been shown to contribute to environmental deterioration.

The main factor contributing to environmental deterioration is a rise in global warming. Scientists have reported that since the turn of the century, the average surface temperature of the Earth has increased by 0.8 degrees Celsius, reaching an all-time high.Professor Brian Hoskins claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels, together with deforestation as another factor contributing to the rise in global warming, has caused the CO2 level to be the highest in around 4.5 million years.

Poor water quality is mostly brought on by nitrogen oxides, other gaseous emissions from businesses, and car pollution. Water bodies are becoming more hazardous because nitrogen deposits function as fertiliser, encouraging the growth of algae. This lowers the quality of the water since the algae obstructs aquatic life's access to oxygen and fosters a eutrophic environment that slowly kills it.

Cultural and natural contrast

The premise that cultural goods like the in issue technology are inferior to nature underlies the entire concept. To expand further, it is a widely held idea that culture is at odds with nature, which implies that technology is diminished and its worth is called into question. It is thought that the environment is most cherished when it is in its pristine natural state, and the introduction of technology will inevitably lessen the essence of nature.

It goes without saying that any representation of nature made possible by technology or any artificially produced natural beauty would always fall short of nature as it truly is.Therefore, it is argued that technology cannot conserve nature and can only artificially build another dimension of the same since a technologically induced environment is judged inferior to true nature.

Saving the environment through technology

With regard to environmental restoration, the arguments that highlight the distinction between cultural and natural may not be refuted but rather questioned because they can hold water even in the case where humans are thought to be separate from nature. This presumption may not be accurate given that humans are byproducts of nature, and according to the argument put forth, technological growth should not be seen as at odds with nature since humans themselves invented technology, making it inaccurate to label it as unnatural.

However, for the purposes of this essay, since there are currently two opposing viewpoints on the subject, it is reasonable to claim that technology is neither positive nor bad but rather neutral. Technology has been suggested by scientists as a means by which, if used properly, the environment can truly be improved. Given that overpopulation is one of the most important concerns facing the world today, birth control methods are seen as a positive development of technology.

Conclusion

Technology might not be able to solve every environmental problem, but when used properly, it can always make improvements. The environment is in such poor shape because technology has been applied and used improperly. Technology alone does not cause climate change, global warming, or pollution; rather, technology is managed poorly.

It is concluded that unchecked and illegal use of technology has a harmful influence on the environment, but if addressed appropriately, has the ability and potential to improve it. Thus, the application of technology decides whether it has a positive or negative effect, so it is important to position technology such that it improves the current state of the environment in which we live.
