Is it true that Google will be the owner of the internet in future?

HARIDHA P322 30-Jan-2023

The internet has grown at an unprecedented rate over the past few decades and has become a fundamental part of our daily lives. It has also led to the rise of powerful technology companies, such as Google, who have had a significant impact on the way we use and interact with the internet. However, there has been speculation that Google will become the 'owner' of the internet in the future. In this blog, we will explore whether this is true and what it could mean for the future of the internet.

First, it is important to understand the extent of Google's influence on the internet. Google is the world's largest search engine, with over 92% of the global market share. It also owns other popular platforms such as YouTube, Gmail, and Google Maps. Additionally, Google's Android operating system is the most popular mobile operating system in the world. As a result, Google has access to a vast amount of data and information about internet users, which it uses to personalize and improve its services.

However, to say that Google 'owns' the internet would be an exaggeration. The internet is a global network of interconnected computers and servers, and no single company or organization controls it. While Google may have a significant presence on the internet, it is just one of many players in the market. Other major technology companies, such as Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft, also have a significant presence on the internet and are constantly innovating and competing with Google.

Moreover, the internet is governed by a variety of organizations and regulations that aim to ensure that the internet remains open and accessible to all. For example, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States has the authority to regulate internet service providers (ISPs) and ensure that they do not discriminate against certain websites or services. Additionally, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) sets standards for the web, which helps to ensure that the internet is accessible to people with disabilities and can be used on a wide range of devices.

Additionally, there are a number of initiatives and organizations that are working to decentralize the internet and promote a more open and accessible internet. For example, the blockchain technology is one such initiative that is being used to create decentralized platforms for various applications, such as social media, e-commerce and content distribution.
Conclusion

While Google does have a significant presence on the internet and has had a major impact on the way we use and interact with it, it is not accurate to say that it 'owns' the internet. The internet is a global network of interconnected computers and servers, and no single company or organization controls it.

Moreover, there are a variety of regulations and organizations that aim to ensure that the internet remains open and accessible to all. While Google's influence on the internet may continue to grow in the future, it is important to remember that it is just one of many players in the market and that the internet is constantly evolving and changing.
