WhatsApp for iOS may have the ability to import conversations from Android devices
HIGHLIGHTS
WhatsApp for iOS is recommended to allow users to transfer chats from Android to iOS.
Even beta testers haven't had access to the functionality yet.
A similar procedure was previously observed with WhatsApp on Android.
WHY IN NEWS
Users may soon be able to transfer their chat history from an Android smartphone to an iPhone with WhatsApp for iOS. On an iPhone, users can only migrate their chats from an existing iPhone handset; they cannot move their chat history from an Android device. Users of the instant messaging programme on select Samsung and Google Pixel phones were able to transfer their chats from an iPhone last year.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp for iOS beta version 22.2.74 has references to the possibility to transfer conversation history from an Android smartphone. The source has supplied an image of WhatsApp requesting users for permission to import their chat history. Beta testers have not yet been given access to the new experience. As a result, it may take some time for it to become a reality for end consumers. Last September, WhatsApp published beta version 2.21.20.11 for Android users, which included the possibility to migrate conversation history from an Android handset to an iOS device. Earlier that month, a similar message occurred on WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.21.19.1.

To relocate conversation history, users may need to physically link their Android phones with a new iOS device using a USB Type-C-to-Lightning cable. According to WABetaInfo, the transfer procedure may also need users to have Apple's Move to iOS software installed on their Android smartphones. WhatsApp brought the chat transfer capability from iOS to some Samsung handsets in August of last year. In late October, it was extended to Google Pixel smartphones. The ability to transfer conversations from iOS is available out of the box for Android 12 smartphones.
