Netflix will face the defamation lawsuit from chess grandmaster Gaprindashvili, US judge rules
Netflix is about to face the Defamatory Lawsuit from a Georgian Chess Grandmaster Gaprindashvili.
The suit involves the allegations of defamation and it added more than the line which has been used in the web series ‘Queen’s Gambit’ as “never faced man” in her career is not true at all.

The Georgian chess grandmaster has filed a lawsuit against the famous OTT platform Netflix and the allegations were made for the defamation of her by adding the statement that she didn’t face any male competitors, which was wrong as revealed by herself that she has faced dozens of man by 1968. The Episode in which such a line was used is the “Queen’s Gambit,” and the amount of the compensation in the lawsuit is $5 million and the lawsuit will be entertained by a Los Angeles Judge.
Nona Gaprindashivlicurrently at the age of 80 and the lawsuit was filed in September claimed the line used in the series as “never faced a man” in her career was “grossly sexist and belittling.”
The series which was set at the time was 1968 in “Queen’s Gambit” on Netflix and by the year she has faced dozens of male competitors.
The advocate for Netflix said that the suit should be dismissed on the ground that the work is a part of fiction and therefore covered by the First Amendment of the US constitution, which protects free speech.
On Tuesday, Federal Judge Virginia Phillips has denied the motion and said as “the fact that the series was a fictional work does not insulate Netflix from liability from defamation if all the elements of the defamation are otherwise is present.”
The series of Queen’s Gambit is based on the Fictional Novel which tells the story of a young orphan who becomes the world’s greatest chess player. The actress is Anya Taylor-Joy is based on a 1983 novel by Walter Tevis.
The other central character Beth Harmon is fictional and the series features several real-life chess characters including Nona Gaprindashvili.
Nona Gaprindashvili is the first woman and chess player who was awarded the International Chess Federation title of Grandmaster, in 1978.
