Toyota is working on a vehicle to explore the lunar surface alongside Japan's space agency, with plans to enable humans live on the moon by 2040 and subsequently on Mars, according to corporate executives . 'We see space as a place where we can make a once-in-a-generation revolution. We may be able to build telecommunications and other technology that will be beneficial to human existence by travelling to space,' Sato told The Associated Press. Gitai Japan, a Toyota-backed startup, has created a robotic arm for the Lunar Cruiser that can conduct activities like inspection and maintenance. Its 'grapple fixture' allows the arm's end to be adjusted, allowing it to do tasks such as scooping, lifting, and sweeping. Sho Nakanose, Gitai's CEO, believes that the difficulty of blasting off into space has been mostly addressed, but that operating in space comes with significant expenditures and risks for astronauts. He believes that's where robots could help.
