HIGHLIGHTS
Twitter announced on Friday that it is bringing the experimental feature of allowing users to downvote answers within tweets to a wider audience. Last year, the feature was first tested with a small group of iOS users. According to Twitter, the ability to downvote replies is used to help explain the types of responses that users find useful in a conversation. Downvotes, on the other hand, are not visible to the general public. This is in contrast to platforms like Reddit, where both upvotes and downvotes are exposed for all to see in order to determine if the public likes or dislikes a given comment.

Twitter users on the Web will now be able to downvote a specific reply in a conversation as a result of the expansion. According to a tweet issued by the Twitter Support account on the platform, the experience will soon be available to Android and iOS users all around the world. It's vital to know that only you will be able to see your downvotes. This means that other users on the platform will be unable to see which responses you have downvoted. Twitter further clarified that the functionality is just being tested for research purposes, and that votes would not affect the order in which people respond.

Twitter introduced downvote replies as an experimental feature in July of last year in order to 'explore on ways to highlight' more relevant comments in a conversation. According to the microblogging network, the initial testing revealed that the majority of its users pressed the down arrow in their comments 'either because the reply was seen as offensive, or because they perceived it as irrelevant, or both.' People most frequently used downvoting to mark items they didn't want to view, according to Twitter. 'Those who have tried downvoting agree that it increases the quality of Twitter conversations.' 'As it becomes more widely available, we're looking forward to hearing what others have to say,' the business added. Downvote replies could become a permanent feature of Twitter's platform in the future, bolstering its algorithms and making them more user-friendly. The ability for users to downvote or dislike a response, on the other hand, might be used to silence dissenting views and opinions.

YouTube, for example, began suppressing 'Dislike' counts from its site last year in order to protect creators from harassment and targeted attacks. Facebook has pondered introducing a 'Dislike' button in the past, but it has not yet rolled it out to the general public. Instead, the business introduced responses, which allow users to express their feelings about a specific message or respond with an emoji.
