WHY IN NEWS
After Russia blocked access to its service, Twitter established a privacy-protected edition of its site to avoid surveillance and censorship. In an attempt to control the flow of information about its conflict in Ukraine, Russia has restricted access to Facebook and curtailed Twitter. Both businesses have stated that they are striving to restore access to individuals within Russia, even though they have barred Russia's state media from using their services. This variation of Tweets is known as an 'onion' service, and it may be accessible by installing the Website extension, which enables customers to visit 'dark web' sites. Instead of.com, onion websites have an .onion suffix.

Regular websites, like Twitter.com, are also reachable through Tor, but the .onion versions are designed expressly for Tor and prevent bad actors from spoofing the site. While the name 'dark Web' connotes unlawful sites such as the Dark Net drugs trade, it is also frequently used by users who want to stay confidential for their protection or access sites that are prohibited by authoritarian regimes. Facebook and other websites, such as the BBC, offer Tor versions as well. According to the business, Twitter's iteration has been in the making for years, dating back to before the Russian invasion.
