The world’s biggest encyclopedia ‘Wikipedia’ Wikimedia Foundation, has announced that Wikipedia will no further accept the crypto in the donations and after declaring the result of the meeting organised among 400 members of Wikipedia forming a community, has closed the BitPay platform which was earlier used for the transaction of cryptocurrency.
The result came after a long time of discussion between the local community members after a long discussion Wikipedia has published Molly White’s proposed a vote on whether crypto donations should be allowed by the organisation. The poll result was amazing because more than 70 percent of the participants in the poll agreed to discontinue all forms of donations in cryptocurrency.
In a statement, the Foundation said “The Wikimedia Foundation has decided to discontinue direct acceptance of cryptocurrency as a means of donating,” it further said “We began our direct acceptance of cryptocurrency in 2014 based on a request from our volunteers and donor communities. We are making the decision based on recent feedback from those same communities.”
As per the statement of the Wikimedia, the organisation started accepting Bitcoin in 2014, it was reasoned that adding Bitcoin as a donation option would help make contributing to the Wikimedia organization “as simple and inclusive as possible.”
While many of the members were against the acceptance of crypto, the supporter of the acceptance of the cryptocurrency cited a need for pseudonymous donations in countries where Wikipedia might be illegal or censored.
Some of the supporters of accepting cryptocurrency in an organisation also said that Bitcoin is a Legal tender in El Salvador and the Central African Republic and hence the foundation should allow people to donate and transact their country’s official currencies.
