The department has also mentioned that as a part of a two-year agreement, Uber would waive wait time fees for only certified disabled riders and pay around $1,738,500 among more than 1,000 riders who had complained about the charges and $500,000 to others who were got injured by the practice. It has added to its statement, Uber would credit accounts for over 65,000 eligible riders.
The department had sued the company in November when passengers had complained about the fees that was charged from them if they would take more than 2 minutes to get into their ride share cars. It has noted in its announcement Monday that blind passengers might take longer to reach in the waiting cars or those with walkers or wheelchairs might take longer to get in.
According to a statement by Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke 'People with disabilities should never be made to feel like second-class individuals or they have been punished for their incapacity,” adding to the statement that the settlement can send 'a strong message that Uber and alternative ridesharing companies are going to be held accountable for such things.'
Well, an Uber spokesperson had welcomed the settlement and stated that it would continue 'to help everybody move easily around their communities' and keep 'working to boost accessibility for all users.'
The company has mentioned that 'It has been our policy from long time to refund the wait time fees for riders with a disability once they alerted us that they were charged,' adding to the statement it has mentioned that it had looked into the changes before the lawsuit to own disabled riders' wait time fees waived automatically once Uber is notified that they were charged.
