FCC Rejection of Rural Broadband Subsidies was appealed by SpaceX
On Friday, SpaceX had challenged the US Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) decision to deny the space company's satellite internet unit $885.5 million in rural broadband subsidies by calling the move 'flawed' as well as 'grossly unfair,' within a very regulatory filing.

Last month, the FCC had turned down the applications from the billionaire Elon Musk's SpaceX and LTD Broadband for funds which has been tentatively awarded in 2020 under the commission's Rural Digital Opportunity Fund, a multibillion dollar program within which SpaceX was poised to receive $885.5 million to beam satellite internet to the US regions with very little to no internet connections.
David Emma Goldman the SpaceX's senior director of satellite policy had written in a scathing appeal which was filed on Friday evening, 'The decision seems to have been rendered in service to a clear bias towards fiber, instead of a merits-based decision in order to connect with un-served Americans.'
SpaceX's Starlink a fast-growing network of over 3,000 satellites in low-Earth orbit has tens of thousands of users within the US till now, with customers paying a minimum of $599 for a user terminal along with $110 per month for service.
After the announcement of the rejection in August, the FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has mentioned Starlink's technology that it 'has real promise' however it would not meet the program's needs, citing information that showed a gradual decline in speeds over the past year and casting the service's worth as too steep for customers.
In the last month’s statement, FCC commissioner Brendan Carr has opposed the FCC’s decision and slammed the agency for rejecting the funds without a full commission vote.
Carr has mentioned that 'In order to be clarified, this was a decision that has mentioned families in states across the country that should be simply waiting on the incorrect side of the digital divide even though we got the technology to enhance their lives currently.'
