Amazon.com unveils device that tracks breath while sleeping
In addition to a redesigned Kindle that enables users to write on the e-reader, Amazon.com Inc. on Wednesday also unveiled a contactless gadget to track customers' sleep patterns.
The Halo Rise sleep monitor, which costs $139.99, according to Amazon, tracks the breathing patterns of the individual who is nearest to it as well as the room's temperature, humidity, and light. Users are intended to get understanding into why they might or might not feel refreshed when they wake up.
Similar to many digital businesses, Amazon has invested in consumer health-tracking devices, but it has occasionally come under regulatory attention for the sensitive data it sought to gather, such as body fat percentage via a fitness wristband called Halo.
Amazon has stated that privacy is at the core of everything it does and that the sleep tracker will encrypt health information.
At its annual products and services presentation, the e-commerce business announced the price of its new e-reader, the Kindle Scribe, at $339.99.
Similar to its rivals Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google, Amazon has made investments in consumer health-tracking technology. These investments have occasionally attracted regulatory attention due to the sensitive data they sought to collect, such as body fat percentage via their fitness wristband Halo.
According to Amazon, privacy is essential to everything company does. The sleep appliance has no camera or microphone and will encrypt medical data.
Announcing in July that it will spend $3.5 billion to acquire primary care provider One Medical (ONEM.O), the retailer is also looking at health in a broader sense.
