Apple keeps hiring staff for its AR-MR headset project: Report
- Amazon, Facebook, and Google are all developing AR technology.
- Apple might add an M2 CPU to the mixed reality headset.
- Apple is allegedly developing a virtual world akin to the metaverse.
Apple is reportedly working on a mixed reality headgear that will likely debut in 2019. After the success of its iPhones, many believe that the headset that mixes parts of virtual and augmented reality will be Apple's next major investment. According to a Bloomberg report, the Cupertino firm is apparently still hiring engineers for the Technology Development Group (TDG) that is developing its AR and VR technology.
An early look at some of the device's features can be seen in Apple's job postings and staff changes. Also hired by Apple is Dave Scott, a former manager who moved engineers working on other projects to the headset team after leaving the company last year.
The TDG, which is working on the company's ambitious mixed-reality headgear and other AR/VR technologies, has undergone administrative changes, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his weekly Power On newsletter. A few job postings suggest that Apple is stepping up efforts to enhance the gadget with content.
Gurman claims that the business is trying to find a software developer with background in visual effects and game asset pipelines who can build digital content for augmented- and virtual-reality settings. Additionally, according to the job postings, Apple intends to develop a video service for the headset that will offer 3D content that can be viewed in VR.
Additionally, Gurman stated in his newsletter that Apple is seeking developers to work on the creation of development tools for augmented and virtual reality. In some listings, there are even clues of App Intents, which would support services like Siri, Search, and Shortcuts.
Further evidence that Apple is developing a virtual setting akin to the metaverse comes from a job listing that mentions the creation of a 3D mixed-reality world. In that entry, it is said that developers would collaborate to 'create tools and frameworks to enable connected experiences in a 3D mixed-reality world.' To address issues in the 3D application environment, they would collaborate with teams from Apple's UI framework, human interface designers, and system capabilities.
Dave Scott, a former Apple senior manager who worked on the company's Project Titan self-driving car unit until 2021, has joined Apple, according to Gurman. Gurman claims that Scott's involvement could lead to the addition of health applications for the headset. Scott is well known for his work in the medical and robotics industries and for getting complicated products ready for shipping.
Yaniv Gur, an engineer with Apple for 20 years, has apparently been transferred to the headset team. Gur's appointment, according to Gurman, 'suggests to me that the corporation is building a suite of productivity apps for the headset,' given the headset team already has an operating system chief named Geoff Stahl.
