Internet forums and Governments are Slow to Regulate Big Tech Companies IT MoS Says
State minister for electronics and information technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar asserted on Sunday that internet discussion boards and governments around the world have been slow to adopt rules for developments by large technology companies that can be harmful to society.
Chandrasekhar also stated that although the Internet has been a force for good, it has also progressively come to stand for risk, user injury, and criminality at the India Internet Governance Forum (IGF), which was hosted by FICCI.
In terms of the necessary legislation and dos and don'ts, international governments, the IGF, and the majority of forums have been too slow to catch up to these large private platforms. For a very long time, we treated them as innovators and innovations rather than dealing with the fact that such innovations would have the capacity to hurt society and its members and cause additional disruptions. He asserted that the government must give safety and trust issues top priority because it is anticipated that 1.2 billion Indians will use the Internet.
'They will consist of both rural and urban populations, as well as the elderly, young, children, and women. Therefore, it has become crucial for the government to uphold its policy commitments to provide our citizens with online safety, trust, and accountability 'the ministers said. He emphasised how the administration is carefully and gradually constructing the legal and policy foundations.
The minister used the example of the intermediary rules, which underwent nearly three-and-a-half months of public consultation, to illustrate how the multi-stakeholder ecosystem that has been built around the Internet in India is assisting us in bridging these policies and building these laws with extensive consultation.
The IT secretary, Alkesh Kumar Sharma, asserted that the Digital India initiative supports the government's initiatives to promote digital literacy by using an indigenous success story that has become a worldwide success due to technological improvements.
