India is one of the top three countries for Facebook user growth
Since approximately December 31, 2022, social media juggernaut Meta asserted in a regulatory filing that India is one of the top three nations influencing the growth of active Facebook users.
In December 2022, there will be an average of 2 billion daily active users (DAUs) worldwide, up from 1.93 billion in December 2021, predicts the company.
Bangladesh, the Philippines, and India were the top three nations, per Meta, whose DAUs rose in comparison to the same time in 2021.
Facebook defines a daily active user as a registered and logged-in user who uses the Messenger app, the company's website or a mobile device on a particular day (and who is also a registered Facebook user).
There were 2.96 billion monthly active users (MAUs) as of December 31, 2022, up 2% from December 31, 2021.
India was one of the top three donors in monthly active users.
According to Meta, 'users in India, Nigeria, and Bangladesh were the top three sources of growth in 2022' in comparison to the same period in 2021.
The company underscored the threat India's planned data protection legal framework poses to its operations there.
Additionally, some nations, including India and Turkey, are considering or have passed legislation implementing data protection requirements, requiring local storage and processing of data, or other requirements that could increase the cost and complexity of providing our services, force us to stop offering our products and services in some nations or result in fines or other penalties, according to the filing dated February 1.
Meta has cautioned investors that it may be liable to fines, orders restricting or prohibiting services in particular locations, or other government-imposed remedies because of information kept on its platforms, using India and Germany as examples.

For instance, the filing claims that legislation in countries like Germany and India has led to the imposition of fines or other penalties for disregarding demands for the removal of certain content, law enforcement cooperation, and disclosure.
