Apple's Vision Pro AR headset to go on sale in February
On Monday, Apple said that the Vision Pro device, which was introduced to compete with Facebook-owned Meta Platforms in the augmented reality (AR) headset market, will be available in the US starting on February 2.
Since the release of the iPhone over ten years ago, Apple's most costly venture has been the Vision Pro. At $3,499, the AR headset is more than three times the price of the most expensive headgear in Meta's lineup of mixed and virtual reality products.
Preorders for Apple's Vision Pro will open on January 19 at 5 a.m. PST, the firm announced. The gadget makes use of a novel semiconductor called R1, which can handle sensor data faster than the blink of an eye.
The headgear will test a market full of gadgets that customers haven't taken to, and it will pit it against Meta directly following years of disputes between the two companies on matters such as developer platform control and user privacy.
The gadget needs to be constantly hooked into a power source.
Apple claims that by using an extra battery that can last up to two hours, it attempted to lighten the headset.
With no extra battery pack needed, Meta's top-of-the-line Quest Pro mixed reality headset—which combines virtual reality with an actual video feed—has a battery life of almost two hours.
Investors and analysts anticipate that the product will only make a minor sales contribution to revenue.
