Google CEO warns employee for more layoffs this year too
According to a report, since January 2024, major international digital companies such as Google and Amazon have let go of over 7,500 workers.
•More job layoffs are planned for this year, Google CEO Sundar Pichai informed staff in a memo on Wednesday.
•According to Pichai, the business has "ambitious goals" in fields like artificial intelligence.
•“The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices,” Pichai said.
The CEO of Google ,Sundar Pichai warned staff members in a memo that more layoffs will be coming this year, following the company's over 1,000 worker layoffs across several businesses last week and the 100 job cuts at YouTube. According to Pichai's memo, which is published by The Verge, the business will need to make "tough choices" to achieve its high goals. The CEO stated that this year's layoffs won't be as severe as those from the previous year, when the business let go of 12,000 employees, or 6% of its total staff.
“These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team. But I know it’s very difficult to see colleagues and teams impacted,” he wrote in an email to staff.
“Many of these changes are already announced, though to be upfront, some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions throughout the year where needed, and some roles may be impacted.”
With over 1,000 employees let go, Google's layoffs last week affected multiple teams, including hardware, engineering, ads, and services. The business also revealed to TechCrunch at the time that Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman were leaving.
Google parent Alphabet's stock surged 55% last year as tech markets recovered from a disastrous 2022, partly because of hype around artificial intelligence. Alongside a recovery in the digital ad industry, revenue grew by double digits in the third quarter.
Google released Gemini, its biggest and most powerful AI model, last month. In certain experiments, the model's performance gradually outperformed OpenAI's GPT-4 model, which is the foundation for ChatGPT.
Over 7,500 Tech Workers Laid Off Already
According to the layoffs tracking website Layoffs. fyi, more than 7,500 computer workers received pink slips in January, making it a terrible start to the year for them. But compared to the hundreds of major layoffs that were revealed by Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, and many other big titans last year, a Reuters report indicates that this year's layoffs are projected to be fewer in scope.
