Gemini AI Assistant is now available in Google Messages
Google has launched the mass implementation of its Gemini feature in Google Messages, as announced at I/O 2024, according to 9To5Google. Over the last few days, stable users have gained access to this revolutionary AI helper, which appears as the initial contact when initiating a new chat.
Highlights:
- Google rolled out Gemini AI in Google Messages, assisting with writing and planning.
- Gemini supports Workspace and YouTube extensions, requires RCS, and isn't available for group chats.
- Dixon Technologies started trial production of Pixel 8 in India, with units expected by September.
After agreeing to the terms and conditions, users are presented with a standard message screen replete with emoji and gallery choices. Although image uploads are allowed, voice memos are not.
Gemini is said to be useful for penning messages, brainstorming, event organizing, or simply engaging in amusing conversations. Its replies are designed for brevity. Unlike Google Assistant in the now-defunct Google Allo, Gemini is limited to one-on-one interactions and cannot be used in group chats.
The functionality supports Gemini Extensions such as Workspace (@Gmail, etc.), @YouTube, and @GoogleMaps, however the YouTube Music extension is noticeably lacking. Users may offer input on answers by long-pressing to provide a thumbs up or down, and they can also start or forward messages. Conversations with Gemini take place over RCS, which must be enabled, but are not end-to-end encrypted. Additionally, Gemini cannot be accessible using the online version of Google Messages or the Wear OS app.
This global deployment excludes the EEA, the UK, Switzerland, and India, although it does contain support for English and French in Canada. Gemini has been accessible to beta users since March.
In other developments, Dixon Technologies has begun trial production of Google's flagship smartphone, the Pixel 8, marking a significant shift in manufacturing to India. This strategic decision demonstrates Google's growing reliance on local manufacture for its high-end smartphones.
The local production timetable for the Pixel 8 series was originally scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, however it looks to be ahead of schedule. According to Economic Times sources, testing runs have begun, with the first Indian-assembled Pixel 8 devices expected to enter the market in September.
