Apple announces new iPhone 'Mercenary Spyware' attack in the world including India
Apple on Thursday gave information to its several users in India, including 91 other countries about possible threat of “mercenary spyware” attack which will occur on their devices.
This was in the form of a threat notification email sent after midnight. This email was sent to all the users across the globe. Apple also informed its users that mercenary spyware was “trying to remotely control” their devices.
In the sent mail, Apple also warned the users about how it is never possible to achieve absolute certainty about the same. While companies work to detect such attacks, it still has “high confidence” in the warning that was sent. This attack is meant for targetin g certain users specifically. This is because of who they are or probably because of what they do.
“These attacks actually cost millions of dollars. These attacks are individually developed against a very small number of people. But the targeting is global. The extreme cost and the sophistication nature makes mercenary spyware attacks one of the most advanced threats till date,” it said.
Apple also uplifted its support page. This was done to include tips for users who could have been targets of the mercenary spyware attack. It was advised to the users to enable the lockdown mode that is already present on their phones. And also advised to update their devices to the latest versions.
An Apple India spokesperson said that the company would not be able to elaborate anything beyond the information found on the notification.
When talked about the threat notifications that were issued on April 2, the government’s nodal agency for cybersecurity had remarked that flaws in certain Safari web browser versions could work as a great reason to help initiate these attacks. So after the notification has arrived people are of course terrified but Apple is handling the case really well.
